Changing singleplayer into multiplayerFor this project we had a simple assignment: design a multiplayer mode or sequel for an existing singleplayer game. Multiple aspects had to be taken into account, like playability, target audience, different game modes and market position.
For our game we chose Super Meat Boy, seeing both challenges and possibilities in a multiplayer version that excited us. We created several modes the player could choose from, keeping the hardcore gameplay of Super Meat Boy in mind. Since the creators made the game with a love for retro gaming, one important aspect was the implementation of local multiplayer, so players could enjoy the game on the couch with friends. An online mode was introduced as well, together with a new level editor and online store, to keep up with current trends. The different modes included a co-op mode, a time-attack mode and a capture the flag mode. Each mode has its own unique characteristics, gameplay elements and level design philosophy.
